Meeting 1: Building Momentum for Generational Reform

  • Australian Parliament House Parliament Drive Capital Hill, ACT, 2600 Australia (map)

The inaugural meeting of the re-established Parliamentary Group for Future Generations in the 48th Parliament marks a pivotal opportunity to reset the national conversation on intergenerational fairness and embed long-term thinking at the heart of Australian governance.

This gathering comes at a critical juncture:

  • Following the federal election, with a clear mandate for generational change.

  • Amid growing state and territory momentum for future generations policies.

  • Against a backdrop of major international developments, including the UN Declaration on Future Generations and renewed global efforts to institutionalise long-term governance.

The meeting will also introduce the Future Generations Policy Framework, offering a lens through which to implement future generations thinking at the individual policy level. It will also build on insights from the Economic Reform Roundtable and align with CEDA’s State of the Nation, identifying entry points for the future generations agenda.

Key priorities include:

  • Reaffirming multi-partisan support for future generations policy as a unifying national agenda, and contextualising it within the current political landscape.

  • Socialising the Policy Framework within current political priorities and catalysing commitment to explore its integration.

  • Strengthening collaboration between parliamentary champions and civil society leaders to drive legislative and policy innovation.

  • Platforming initiatives in practice, showcasing how state-level and civil society leadership are shaping long-term thinking.
